UKRiots

After using many resources I have based an opinion on the events taking place in the UK. As with any issue, there is always two sides to the story. In this situation, there is the establishment, and the anti-establishment. The Establishment is the "upper class", the police and the government. The Anti-Establishement are those in the society, specifically the looters. After reading many articles and watching videos I have learned what both sides believe to be right. The youth are rioting because they feel they are discriminated based on age, race and social status. Due to the spending cuts and lack of employment the youth feel like the government is not dealing with the problem. So, they riot.

The Establishment on the other hand takes no blame. They say that the rioters are just the poor "thugs" and "hoodies". The government choses what to do and that is how it's done. I found the link below and opinions very interesting, specifically the words of David Cameron. Cameron basically said that the looters are a small population and non representative of the country. He also promised to toughen police tactics, and "harshly punish" those participating in the looting and rioting caught on film. As the article says, officials plan to regain power no matter what, despite the reasoning of the rioters.

To me, this says that the government fears the youth. They fear that they have made a mistake, and that teenagers have power. They have no intentions of considering what they have to say because they are "low life thugs" whose opinions are irrelevant. The officials do not understand that a "thugs" opinion can go unoticed and ignored, but when thousands come together, that small voice becomes quite loud. The rioters are not thugs, they are citizens. Yes, maybe from a poor community, but no less important than a middle class person.

I do agree that perhaps the riots have been taken too far and that some people may be rioting for a thrill and not a demonstration. I can imagine the anger the youth must feel and rioting would burn of that steam, but that is not the purpose of a demonstration. I don't doubt that there are people rioting for this exact reason. But I also don't doubt that the majority of those rioters have something to say, and that their violent ways will not stop until they are heard.
